AI image generation (EN)

The workshop day will cover both theory and practice. Miguel Mira, the trainer of the day, shares insights on the history of human innovation and the crucial role of technology in shaping our identity, from simple tools to sophisticated machines.

1. Theoritical discussion points, e.a.

  • "Homo Technologicus" and Human Technology
    • Exploring the concept of "Homo Technologicus," the symbiotic relationship between humans and technology.
    • Human technology is unique in its complexity, often involving tool kits and systems of knowledge. Which tools and systems are you using as a creative, and why?
  • The Humanistic Nature of Technology
    • Thinking about technology as something deeply human, where we use machines and complex thoughts to live alongside them, allows us to see technology not as a “boogie man” but as a uniquely human creation. If we consider AI as a form of technology, we can observe that AI is a human phenomenon.
    • Images generated by AI model Stable Diffusion reflect our own troubling racial and gender biases, starkly exaggerated in over thousands of generated images.
    • Recognizing that AI is a man-made creation makes it clear that it is still within human control, and we should harness its power for a positive societal change. The current concerns should focus on automation's impact on human society.

In the practical part, he will conduct a workshop on AI image generation, focused on stimulating the imagination and teaching skills to create visually stunning images from scratch. The workshop highlights the complexities of the AI image generator Stable Diffusion, from coming up with ideas to turning them into captivating visuals. It offers a unique opportunity to release creative constraints and explore the limitless possibilities of AI-assisted image creation.

2. Practical Discussion Points (PDP):

  • Understanding Stable Diffusion
    • The introduction to Stable Diffusion highlights its role as a deep learning model that converts text to images, employing image noise and high-dimensional vectors to create meaning.
    • An overview of its history reveals the initial training phases with low-resolution images and its subsequent evolution through various checkpoints.
    • It is important to note the accessibility and ease of use of Stable Diffusion, as it can run on consumer-grade graphics cards.
  • UI and Utilizing Checkpoints
    • Exploring the user interface (UI) of Stable Diffusion, including the use of multiple Checkpoints, LoRas (Low-Rank Adaptation), Sampling Methods, Styles and Control Net.
    • We will understand the practical aspects of using Stable Diffusion to generate images, manipulating styles, and experimenting with various artistic concepts.
    • With a hands-on demonstration of manipulating checkpoints we can create unique artistic effects and explore diverse visual styles.
  • Creating a Personal Portfolio with Stable Diffusion
    • A guided session on how to curate and build a personal portfolio using images generated with Stable Diffusion ensues. Participants may either use the software on their PCs, hardware permitting, or the online version: https://stablediffusionweb.com/image-generator
    • We will delve into tips and tricks, showcasing diverse styles, themes, and creative concepts for the participants portfolio.
    • We will encourage participants to experiment with Checkpoints, Sampling Methods, and Styles Control Net to deepen and develop a unique artistic identity.

3. Conclusion: Reflecting on Creativity and Innovation

  • Participants will reflect on their experience, newfound knowledge, and artistic creations.
  • Highlighting the immersive nature of the discussion and its impact on understanding the intersection of AI and art.
  • We will encourage continued exploration of Stable Diffusion and other AI tools to push the boundaries of their creativity and innovation in the digital art landscape.
